Restore Your Gum Line with the Chao Pinhole Surgical Technique
Over time, periodontal disease can cause gum recession, impacting patients' oral health and resulting in dental sensitivity. Traditionally, patients had to undergo a gum grafting procedure to address gum recession, which involves incisions and sutures. However, Dr. Roger Parkes and Dr. R. Clarke Stewart at Periodontal Associates of Jackson, P.A. in Jackson, MS, now offer an advanced alternative for the right candidates, delivering faster results with reduced discomfort, bleeding, and swelling. Using the minimally-invasive Chao Pinhole® surgical technique, we can rejuvenate receding gums without a scalpel or sutures, helping patients achieve optimal oral health while restoring balance and aesthetics to the gum line.
Who is Good Candidate?
This procedure is ideal for patients who are struggling with gum recession, but are looking for a less invasive approach to soft tissue grafting. Gum recession occurs when soft tissue surrounding the base of a tooth begins to pull away and expose the tooth roots. This condition is generally caused by gum disease, poor oral hygiene, and aggressive tooth brushing, but it can also develop as a result of hormonal changes, smoking, and aging. Once gums begin to recede, the only way to reverse the effects is through traditional gum grafting treatments or the Chao Pinhole Surgical Technique.
The Chao Pinhole Surgical Technique
This technique was developed by Dr. John Chao in 2006 as a more comfortable approach to addressing gum recession. This blade-free and suture-free procedure can be performed under a local anesthetic and does not require tissue removal. Before undergoing the procedure, your doctor can perform a thorough evaluation of your teeth, gums, and jawbone to ensure you are a candidate.

After administering a local anesthetic, your doctor can carefully insert a small needle above the affected area to create a tiny hole. He can then place a special dental instrument through the hole and gently shift the gum tissue into proper alignment. To ensure comprehensive results, he can repeat the procedure until all areas of recessed gums are addressed. Once corrected, he can stabilize the gums by inserting tiny collagen strips through the hole. The length of the procedure will depend upon the extent of treatment, but it typically takes about one hour per tooth.
It is not uncommon to experience some swelling or tenderness for the first 24 hours after visiting our office. However, you can generally resume normal activities the day after the procedure. As your gums heal, we recommend following a regimented oral hygiene schedule to keep the area clean. You should also avoid spicy, crunchy, and other abrasive foods so as not to disturb recovery.
