Can Receding Gums Grow Back?

If your gums begin receding, is it possible for them to grow back?

Gum recession occurs when the gums begin to pull away from your teeth. When this occurs, your teeth begin to look longer than normal. This may happen for a number of reasons including brushing your teeth too aggressively or grinding your teeth.

But, once your gums begin receding, can they grow back? 

Unfortunately, gums cannot grow back. Luckily, there are treatment options that can bring your gums back to the normal length. If you leave this issue untreated, your teeth will become more susceptible to decay. One of the treatments that a dentist or periodontist can perform is a gum graft. A gum graft is a treatment that uses gum tissue from other parts of your mouth, such as the roof of the mouth, and placing it on the gum area. 

Another treatment option is called the Chao Pinhole Surgical Technique. This treatment, which was developed in 2006, does not require any removal of tissue and is a more comfortable treatment option. This technique uses a small dental instrument to move the gums into the proper position.

The best way to fight against receding gums is to practice proper dental hygiene and schedule regular trips to the dentist. Gum recession can lead to more serious dental health problems such as tooth decay and gum disease.
