When you look in the mirror and smile do you see more of your gum than you wish? Unfortunately, there are health reasons that cause you to have a “gummy smile”.

Listed below are some reasons that you may have a gummy smile:

- Excessive visible gum tissue - If your gum tissue covers part of your teeth your gums will become more visible than normal.

- Hyperactive lip muscles - This is when your lip raises higher than normal and exposes more of your gum tissue when you smile.

- Development of your upper jaw bone - If your upper jaw bone grew and developed incorrectly it could be exposing more of your gums than normal.

In our next blog on “gummy smiles” Dr. Parkes will review ways to treat these conditions.
