Periodontal Disease Risk Factors
Tobacco Use
Those who smoke or use chewing tobacco are at a much greater risk of developing periodontal disease. They also tend to develop more serious forms of gum disease, and have much lower chances of successful treatment.
Diabetes
Like other conditions that compromise your immune system (AIDS, leukemia, high stress), patients with diabetes are at a higher risk of developing infections, including periodontitis.
Certain Medications
Many medications cause side effects such as dry mouth, which reduces the flow of saliva. Without adequate saliva production, plaque is more likely to accumulate, making the patient more vulnerable to gum disease.
Hormonal Changes
Hormonal changes, such as those that occur during puberty, pregnancy, and menopause, can increase the risk of periodontal disease.
Genetics
Patients who have a family history of gum disease are at a much higher risk of developing the condition themselves.

Periodontal Disease Basics
Periodontal Disease Treatment
Antibiotics
We may prescribe antibiotics to eliminate infection. Medication could be administered as pills, medicated toothpaste, or mouthwash.
Scaling and Root Planing
Scaling and root planing is a conservative but effective option for patients with gingivitis or gum disease. This deep cleaning procedure is effective in cleaning the teeth below the gum line, and reducing the pockets that can develop between the teeth and gums.
LANAP
The Laser Assisted New Attachment Procedure (LANAP®) uses light energy to eradicate bacteria in the pockets that form between the gums and teeth in patients with advanced gum disease. In addition to eliminating infection, the light energy also fosters reattachment of the gums to the teeth, and can stimulate bone growth.
Flap Procedure
The flap procedure allows our dentists to clean the root of the tooth and repair bone damage. A small flap will be created in the gum tissue to allow access to the root, and then stitched back into place following the procedure.
Laser Gum Therapy
Using advanced laser technology, our team can identify and eliminate bacteria below the gum line to effectively treat periodontal disease. Since this technique is less invasive than traditional methods, patients can experience reduced discomfort and a quicker recovery time following their procedure.
No-Incision Periodontal Treatment
Following LANAP (Laser Assisted New Attachment Procedure) protocol, our team can perform all stages of gum surgery without creating incisions. Using a dental laser, we can remove tartar and bacteria from the pockets between your teeth and gums, and seamlessly reattach the gums to the tooth surface.
Chao Pinhole Surgical Technique
Our team is pleased to provide the Chao Pinhole Surgical Technique® to our patients. This method of gum grafting requires only a pinhole-sized incision, through which the soft tissues can be moved into the proper alignment. No sutures are required, and recovery time is significantly reduced.
Pocket Reduction
By shrinking down the size of the pockets formed by periodontal disease, this procedure can eliminate bacteria and reduce the risk of long-term damage to the gums.
LANAP Laser vs. Traditional Gum Surgery
Traditional periodontal surgery involves the use of a scalpel to remove diseased gum tissue. Using the LANAP technique, our team can eliminate infected tissue with a dental laser. This process reduces pain, is less likely to result in bleeding gums, results in a quicker recovery time, and encourages smooth gum reattachment and bone regeneration.
Another 5-Star Review
"Most people consider dental work to be an unpleasant experience. Not so with these folks! From the minute I walked in all the ladies in the office were cheerful and accommodating. Dr. Stewart and Doris Ann did an amazing job with my surgery...no pain or problems, then or now, days later. They got my lingering problems corrected and I'm very impressed! Can't say enough about the care and professionalism. Two thumbs up to them and their team for a pleasant experience!!" Mike O.
Other Periodontal Procedures
Treating Gummy Smiles
Cosmetic gum contouring can remove excess gum tissue, giving your smile an attractive frame. Using specially designed lasers, we can reshape the gums for a more uniform and refined smile. There is no significant downtime, and patients can enjoy the aesthetic benefits immediately after treatment.
Cosmetic Gum Contouring
For patients with an asymmetrical gum line, our team can contour the area to create a beautiful, even smile. This treatment is virtually painless and can be performed in a single appointment. Gum contouring can enhance your smile and self-confidence.
Correcting Gum Recession
Patients with receding gums can undergo soft tissue grafting to protect the tooth roots. During this procedure, healthy gum tissue is harvested from the roof of your mouth or another area. This treatment can reduce your risk of dental decay and improve the appearance of elongated teeth.
Eradicating Bad Breath
Bad breath can often be a sign of more severe health conditions like periodontitis or even diabetes. A professional diagnosis can determine the cause and lay the foundation for effective treatment.
