Mini Dental Implants Replace Missing Teeth with Less Invasive Treatment
Mini dental implants are smaller than traditional implants and are considered to be a great alternative for patients who have compromised or weakened jawbone tissue. Mini dental implants at Periodontal Associates of Jackson in Jackson, MS, are surgically inserted in the strongest areas of your jaw and create less of an impact on the surrounding bone. This restorative solution promotes a less invasive approach and faster recovery time for our patients. As trained dentists with over 30 years of experience, Dr. Roger B. Parkes and Dr. R. Clarke Stewart use state-of-the-art dental implant technology to provide our patients the best possible care.
How Do Mini Dental Implants Work?
While traditional implants are typically 3.5 to 4.2 millimeters in diameter, mini dental implants range in size from only 2 to 3 millimeters. These implant posts can support most types of restorations, and can even support a full denture. They also do not require bone grafting, flap surgery, or sutures. For older patients who cannot tolerate more extensive surgery or for patients with jawbone deterioration that cannot support traditional implants, mini dental implants provide an excellent solution to replacing missing teeth.
Drs. Parkes and Stewart place mini dental implants under local anesthetic in approximately one to two hours. In some cases, your restoration can be placed on the same day as the procedure. Compared to traditional implants, this procedure is less invasive and provides limited impact to the gums and jawbone for an overall quicker recovery. Most patients are able to return to work within a couple of days and any discomfort typically subsides within 48 hours. Although many patients can eat on the same day that their procedure is performed, we recommend a soft foods diet for the first few days.
Are You a Candidate?
You may be an excellent candidate for mini dental implants if you:
- Are older but in good overall health
- Have reduced jawbone tissue that cannot support traditional implants
- Have healthy gums with no signs of periodontal disease
- Do not grind your teeth

Advantages and Disadvantages of Mini Dental Implants
One disadvantage of mini dental implants is that these posts are not as durable as traditional implants and are typically not appropriate for single molar replacement. However, for many patients, the advantages far outweigh the disadvantages. The benefits of mini dental implants can include:
- Natural-looking and natural-feeling results
- Fast recovery with optimal comfort
- Same-day restoration placement
- More affordable than traditional implants
- Can support all types of implant-supported restorations
- Less trauma to your gums and jawbone
