In our Jackson dental office, I advise our patients of the importance of getting treatment for gum disease.  Immediate treatment is the best way to save your gums and your oral health.

Everyone can greatly reduce their risk for gum disease with proper oral hygiene, including regular brushing and flossing, regular check ups, and professional cleanings every six months to a year.

The most common treatments are non-surgical treatments include the following:

  1. Antibiotic Treatment-antibiotic use can help to control the bacterial infection caused by gum disease. These can be topical and oral.
  2. Root Planing-smoothing the root surfaces to reduce or discourage further tartar buildup.
  3. Scaling-this procedure removes the tartar and bacteria from underneath the gums and on the surface of the teeth.

In more advanced cases, surgical treatment may be needed.
