Tips to Quench Your Thirst! Dry Mouth - Part 3  By Roger B. Parkes, DMD on July 09, 2015

In parts one and two of blog series on Dry Mouth, we discussed what dry mouth was, and some of the causes. At Periodontal Associates of Jackson, we want to help inform the our Mississippi patients about their oral health.

Now let’s take a look at some tips on treatments to help alleviate the symptoms and get some relief!

Tips to increase the flow of saliva:

  • Drink plenty of water
  • Brush and floss at least 2 times a day (use a soft bristled tooth brush)
  • Chew sugarless gum
  • Sleep with a humidifier
  • Use moisturizer on your lips regularly
  • Use an over-the-counter artificial saliva substitute
  • Visit your dentist regularly

Sometimes the underlying cause for dry mouth cannot be changed. Most commonly, it is the medication prescribed, not the disease or condition itself that causes dry mouth.

Stay tuned for Part 4 of our blog series on Dry Mouth for additional ways to alleviate the symptoms and find relief.
